“In high school, I never fit in. Well, I found that I fit in with those who also didn’t fit in, so I kind of fit in. If you could call it that.”
“Did that help you later in life?”
“Oh sure. Now I am able to converse with all sorts of people about all sorts of things. Even the ones who are vapid, shallow and/or narrow minded. Maybe especially them.”
“And why especially them?”
“Because it takes less energy to talk about things that don’t matter, and that seems to be all those types have to talk about. Usually, I try to find another interesting and less provincial person to talk to.”
“What was your best lesson from high school?”
“I learned from high school that being unique, being oddly strange and willing to challenge the status quo, willing to be yourself – well, that put everyone else on edge and put them at odds with you. I learned to accept myself and not give a flying f*ck about what other people think. Although, that last part? Took me a while. But I got there.”
“Anything else to share?”
“Yes. My mother was right. Just be yourself and people will like you. Except I like to edit it a bit: Just be yourself and the RIGHT people will like you. To hell with the rest of them!”
